Monday September 4, 2000 COMPANY PRESS RELEASE Six Nobel Laureates at the University of Sheffield for the Sir Hans Krebs Centenary Symposium To celebrate the centenary of the birth of Sir Hans Krebs, six Nobel Prize winners will speak on Monday 4th September 2000 at a one-day symposium, sponsored by Transgenomic Limited, at the University of Sheffield (Yorkshire, UK). Topics will include some of the greatest advances in molecular biology and medicine in recent years and the future of life science. On the following day, Tuesday 5th September, the Laureates will be guests of Transgenomic Limited at the official opening of their new European facility in Crewe (Cheshire, UK). In 1935, Krebs was appointed lecturer in pharmacology in the University of Sheffield and in 1945 he was awarded a professorship. In 1953, while still at Sheffield, he won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for piecing together the complex cellular process we now know as the Krebs cycle. It is rare that six of the greatest living scientific minds are gathered in one place and, thanks to Transgenomic and The University of Sheffield, the Sir Hans Krebs Centenary Symposium will give us an insight into their thoughts. Nobel Laureate Professor Steven Chu will discuss how physical techniques can provide information about the function of biomolecules and Sir John E Walker will illustrate how physics and chemistry are teaching us how cells generate energy. Professor Sir Harry Kroto examines how chemists will contribute to life sciences in the future while Professor Rich Roberts looks at how genome sequencing will help to identify novel enzymes for biotechnology. Professor Eric Wieschaus will describe how the development of embryos in organisms such as fruit flies can help us understand our own developmental stages and finally, Professor Stanley Prusiner, the pioneer of prion biology, will discuss their importance in diseases such as BSE and CJD. Transgenomic Limited is the UK arm of Transgenomic Inc. a global company involved in the development, manufacture, and marketing of advanced solutions for the analysis of nucleic acids. Laboratories worldwide are using these instruments for mutation screening, functional genomics and genotyping in research and diagnostics. Sir Hans Krebs, through his association with the University of Sheffield, lends his name to the Krebs Institute for Biomolecular Research which has many industrial links. The Transgenomic Research Laboratory, located within the Institute, embodies the close alliance between the Institute and Transgenomic. Photographs:
